Fish: the water is the first thing you look at

Ammonia and oxygen kill more than the famous parasite.

  1. Have a kit: temperature, pH, TAN, nitrite, nitrate and, if tap, chlorine.

    Test the water today.

  2. TAN 0, nitrite 0, oxygen > 5 mg/L.

    If TAN or nitrite is detectable, test daily.

  3. Filter maturity can take about 6 weeks.

  4. Chlorine and chloramine are toxic. Neutralizing chloramine releases ammonia.

    If they gasp at the surface, look at the water, not a tonic.
